Play with Redditors. Previously, fans of StarCityGames could subscribe to SCG Premium for $50/year, as well as shorter-term but more expensive options including $10/month. Announced today, they have 'streamlined' their subscription service into a single $8/month option. Cheaper than before for short-term, but do the math. That's $96/year.

According to the article, the new structure is 'much more in line with industry standards.' Most Magic content is published for free, and supported by sponsors and/or Patreon. The new membership structure includes 5% off most online purchases at starcitygames.com. I sure don't buy $920 worth of singles in a year-that's the amount needed for the discount to cancel out the price hike-and for what singles I do buy, StarCityGames often doesn't have the lowest prices, so I'm giving some of that back. I'm disappointed that this announcement was timed to coincide with the much-hyped B&R update, as it seems that it was planned to get lost in the chatter. SCG must know that this will be an unpopular move and doesn't want it to get a lot of attention. I hope that I'm wrong, that people like me who subscribed annually in the old system were the outliers, and that most members subscribed monthly and are now seeing the advertised 20% price reduction-but I will not be renewing my subscription.
StarCityGames has long had some of the best content on the Internet, but I'm not paying twice as much for it as before. SCG Premium articles are the best for grinders who want metagame analysis of Standard and Modern, and might be deciding what deck to play on a fairly regular basis. There are multiple articles per week that discuss multiple high-performing archetypes in some detail. CFB has the best video content and draft videos; TCGPlayer has good content but just not a lot of it; MtGGoldfish seems to focus more on casual play and casual formats. But for written content, particularly for Standard, SCG is really the best. Well, their premium content is a lot better than their free content.
There are better writers and worse writers, even on the premium side, and individual writers have better or worse articles. You can always count on Patrick Chapin to word-vomit bad deck ideas during spoiler season, for instance, but his articles are always really entertaining and interesting.
Whereas Ari Lax tends to offer really detailed breakdowns of what decks he's playing, but he's much more about tuning than brewing. I would probably pay (at old rates) for SCG Premium for just GerryT and Sam Black. Consistently excellent content that varies in form. I find them to be lacking any significant content. Honestly I don't think she's very good as a writer or player.
She won a single SCG classic, and despite no Open top 8s to her name (or even top 16s), she was suddenly made into a 'Player to Watch,' feature match regular, and columnist. Her only credentials are being friends with Emma Handy (which they can't seem to mention often enough on stream) and that she's a mildly successful woman in the game.
The other writers and PTW have gotten there by success in the Opens against the best. See, the premium side usually has articles about what decks are good in the meta, how to sideboard with a deck, how to go about testing, etc., etc. They're useful for competitive players to read. The article you linked I think is full of things that are either very low level, poorly-defined, disagreeable, or otherwise not worth the time it would take most competitive players to read.
Like, what she's trying to describe isn't called 'midrange', it's called 'tempo'. Trying to two-card per turn your opponent and trade up in mana is about tempo. It doesn't apply to just (or even primarily) midrange decks.
